Tuesday, May 9, 2023
In the session entitled “Measuring Quality of Care and Effective Coverage for Newborn Health: Progress and Gaps”, the panel presented on recent research that aims to define and address some of the gaps in service delivery, including the development of methods and indices to assess service quality for newborn health; assessment of readiness and quality data on newborns in facility registers and routine data systems; and development of effective coverage cascades and measures for postnatal care, care for small and sick newborns, and feeding small and sick newborns.

Effective Coverage Satellite Session from 7th Global HSR Symposium
Tuesday, November 1, 2022
Methods for calculating effective coverage, which is also called quality-adjusted coverage, continue to be refined, and this approach is increasingly being used to inform country-level decision-making. The recording of a satellite session titled, “Measuring effective coverage and quality of care to improve the health of women, children, and adolescents in low and middle income countries”, which took place at the 7th Global Symposium on Health Systems Research in November 2022, is now available. Improve hosted this session in partnership with the Countdown project.

Webinar: What can (and can’t) household surveys tell us about nutrition and diarrhea interventions in LMIC?
Monday, September 12th
In this webinar we presented on the results of validation studies on iron-folic acid supplementation, breastfeeding counseling, and diarrhea severity indicators collected through household surveys. There was rich discussion on what was learned from these studies, and on the application of these results on the country and global level. The panelists advocated for continued research in this area and emphasized its importance in ensuring reliable measurement of the coverage of nutrition and health interventions. This work was completed as part of the Improving Measurement and Program Design Project (Improve).

Webinar: Measuring effective coverage and quality of care
Thursday, September 15th
This webinar presented methods for estimating effective coverage cascades in LMICs, including quality-adjusted coverage. There was in-depth reflection on the interpretation and use of effective coverage analyses, addressing the question “for whom, and for what purposes, are effective coverage analyses useful?” Panelists discussed the importance of going beyond simple standard coverage measures to fully account for the quality of services received by women and children to reflect the impact of programs. This work was completed as part of the Improving Measurement and Program Design Project (Improve), which developed evidence-based methods for conducting effective coverage analyses.
